how to clean a moldy french press

Does your dark roast have a funky flavor? You might need to learn how to clean a coffee filter.

Nothing like a steaming of cup of coffee to get your morning started—until…whoa! Ick! Is something funky going on in your mug? It's not your imagination. It's not because you made one of these 10 coffee-brewing mistakes, either.

It could be your reusable coffee filter saying it needs a good cleaning. Lucky for you, that's a snap!

How to clean a coffee filter

When a reusable coffee filter (such as in a French press or a reusable mesh filter for your drip coffeemaker) is part of your coffee-making repertoire, you're making more flavorful coffee than you would with a disposable paper filter. The catch, however, is you have to actually clean that reusable filter, or coffee's essential oils can clog up your filter, making for a weak or funky-tasting brew.

Cuisinart makes this reusable coffee filter (among others), and recommends two basic methods for keeping your coffee filter clean. When you're done brewing, you should:

  • Rinse your filter in warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly; or
  • Let it run in the in upper rack of dishwasher

In either case, wipe the coffeemaker under the filter basket with a damp cloth. That should keep your coffee filter working like a charm!

Psst… May we recommend our absolute favorite brand of coffee?

How to deep clean a coffee filter

If you didn't get the prior memo about cleaning your coffee filter on the regular before your coffee started tasting weird, then you'll need to use this deep cleaning method. Don't worry though—it's easy. Simply soak the coffee filter in a 1:2 mixture of distilled white vinegar to water. Overnight is ideal. If you don't have time to soak your filter before your next use, then you can use a bit of baking soda on a scrub-brush. (You can clean everything with baking soda!)

Now that your coffee filter's back to its fighting weight, here are a bunch of coffee shop copycat recipes that will taste like you paid $6 for your drink.
